Description

Germany
Quadruple Alliance bronze Medal 1916 About XF (cleaned), 42.10gm, 49.5mm. By A.R. Weinberger. A classically propagandistic World War I-era medal, pairing the motif of St. George slaying the dragon--a traditional symbol of the triumph of good over evil--with the quadruple jugate busts of Wilhelm II of Germany, Franz Joseph II of Austria, Ferdinand I of Bulgaria, and Mehmed V of the Ottoman Empire. Perhaps at one time silvered, as two other examples from Baldwin's Auctions 41 and 43 (Lots 1864 and 3457) were. Ex. Dr. Hans Wilski CollectionHID05401242017
