TURKEY: Abdul Mejid, 1839-1861, gilt AE medal (141.33g), 1853, NP-1105, 68mm; ABDUL-MEDJID-KHAN EMPEREUR DES OTTOMANS, bust of Abdul Mejid, facing // EUROPE ILS SONT MORTS POUR TOI ("Europe, they died for you"), robed female with Turkish staff, placing wreath on altar commemorating Turkish losses at Sinope, signed HART FECIT for L.S. Hart. When the Ottoman fleet was destroyed by the Russians at Sinop, Britain and France joined with the Turks to prevent a massive Russian expansion in the Middle East. Sinop is a Turkish port city at the Black Sea.
